Tree Houses

The idea of building two tree houses in Embers Shaw will not be progressed

The Chipstead Village Preservation Society (CVPS) held an EGM on Monday 24th February. The principle purpose of the meeting was to obtain Members’ approval for the charity to become a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and to agree a new constitution - this was achieved.

We also took the opportunity to obtain views on the idea of building two tree houses in the woods alongside Elmore Road.  Last year the CVPS was approached by Sean and Selma Clare, who live in the village and asked if the CVPS would rent them a small piece of land within Embers Shaw on which they would build two tree houses. The Trustees debated the proposition on a number of occasions. We were aware that some might think that this commercial venture would have adverse effects on Embers Shaw. On the other hand, the CVPS is resource constrained and the significant new income stream would allow the Society to do more than in the past to improve other aspects of our village environment. The Trustees felt there would be benefit in obtaining the views of the wider membership.

Sean Clare gave an excellent presentation to the group of about 60 who attended the EGM (including a number who were not members) and answered questions. Views were expressed both for and against the idea. At the end of the meeting a straw poll indicated a number in favour of the tree houses and the ability for the CVPS to expand its activities and a slightly larger number against. However, a large proportion were undecided. In view of this reaction Sean and Selma graciously decided not to go ahead with their idea of locating tree houses on CVPS land.

The Trustees are grateful to all those who attended the EGM and expressed their views. As with another recent referendum it demonstrated a diversity of opinion. However, it also showed continued support for the preservation of Chipstead’s green spaces.  It is interesting to observe that some who expressed the strongest views at the meeting are not currently members of the CVPS and we look forward to them joining in the near future.
