Chipstead Decorative and Fine Arts Society
Chipstead Decorative and Fine Arts Society (CHIDFAS) covers not only Chipstead but also Banstead, Nork, Woodmansterne, Tadworth and the surrounding areas. The society is a member of the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS), an organisation having 90,000 members. Its aim is to promote the appreciation and study of the decorative and fine arts and to assist in the preservation of our national artistic heritage for the benefit of the public.
The Chipstead society, founded in 1988, arranges an annual programme of ten lectures on varying subjects. The lecturers are chosen from an extensive directory, prepared by the National Association that vet and select every speaker. They are all experts in their own specialist field of the decorative or fine arts.
CHIDFAS is a friendly group with a membership of 300. We meet on the first Wednesday of the month (except July and August) in the Banstead Community Hall for coffee at 9.50 am followed by a lecture at 10.30.
In addition to our monthly meetings we arrange outings to historic houses, art galleries and museums, for example- Knole, The Wallace Collection, Hampton Court, Stowe and The Mansion House. Twice a year there are short group holidays of four or five days further afield. Recent trips have been to Yorkshire, Normandy, Suffolk and one is arranged for Malta. Days of special interest are also organised and have included the subjects of jewellery, nomadic rugs and silverware.
Volunteers from CHIDFAS are currently recording the contents of Saint Peter’s Church, Woodmansterne and have previously recorded the contents of All Saint’s Church, Banstead and St Margaret's Church, Chipstead. We are involved through the NADFAS Young Arts scheme in seeking to encourage 8-18 year olds locally to develop an interest in the arts.
Membership is currently £31 per annum. A waiting list is in place for membership. Invited visitors may attend meetings by arrangement with a member. For further information about the society visit www.chipstead-dfas.org.uk/or contact the secretary Valerie Isaacs Tel: 01737 550514.
